Three good things happened today.
- It snowed yesterday
- It’s sunny today
- The athletes are here!
Together, these three elements have made everything a lot better up here in Krasnaya Polyana. My cynicism and despair is long gone. There are actual skiers here now from China to Slovakia to Finland gliding along fresh cross-country tracks under a cloudless sky. I’m now starting to get a little bit excited about the Games kicking off.
Today was general training for the cross-country skiers and biathlon athletes, which basically means they can rock up at any point during the day and practice their skiing in the nice clean tracks cut out for them in the snow. The nice thing about cross-country training is it looks pretty stress-free. They power along with their team members, chatting away and stopping occasionally to take a picture of the view. They just look like they’re on holiday! Apart from the fact they’re lycra-ed up to the eyeballs.
One of my favourite parts of the day was catching the Slovakian athletes taking a selfie and this Chinese fella who just wanted to get his photo taken.
